Ihram & Preparation Guide

What is Ihram?

Ihram is a sacred state of purity that every pilgrim must enter before performing Hajj. It signifies complete devotion to Allah, requiring physical and spiritual discipline.

Key Aspects of Ihram:

  • Wearing special clothing (for men) and adopting modest attire (for women).

  • Avoiding certain actions that are normally allowed, such as using perfume or cutting hair.

  • Purifying one’s intention (Niyyah) and reciting the Talbiyah.

How to Wear Ihram?

For Men:

  • Wear two unstitched white garments:

    • Izar (lower body wrap)

    • Rida (upper body wrap)

  • Avoid stitched clothing, covering the head, and closed shoes.

  • Use simple sandals/slippers that don’t cover the ankles.

For Women:

    • Wear modest, loose-fitting clothing that covers the entire body.

    • No specific Ihram dress, but the face and hands must remain uncovered.

    • No perfume or makeup should be applied after entering Ihram.

Making Niyyah (Intention) & Talbiyah

After wearing Ihram, pilgrims make their intention (Niyyah) for Hajj before crossing the Miqat (Hajj boundary).

Niyyah for Hajj:
“Labbaik Allahumma Hajj”
(“O Allah, I am here to perform Hajj.”)

Talbiyah (Chant of Hajj)
After making Niyyah, recite the Talbiyah repeatedly:

“Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk, innal hamda, wan-ni’mata, laka wal mulk, la shareeka lak.”
