Tawaf & Sa'i Guide
This page will guide users through Tawaf (circling the Ka’bah) and Sa’i (walking between Safa & Marwah), two essential rituals of Hajj and Umrah.
What is Tawaf?
Where? Masjid al-Haram, Makkah
When? Tawaf is performed multiple times during Hajj.
Tawaf is the act of circling the Ka’bah 7 times counterclockwise, starting from Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone).
Types of Tawaf:
- Tawaf al-Qudum – Performed upon arrival in Makkah.
- Tawaf al-Ifadah – The main Tawaf of Hajj (on 10th Dhul Hijjah).
- Tawaf al-Wada’ – Farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah.
How to Perform Tawaf
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Step 1: Make Niyyah (intention) before starting.
- Step 2: Begin from Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone), raising your hand and saying “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.”
- Step 3: Walk around the Ka’bah 7 times in an anticlockwise direction.
- Step 4: Men should do Ramal (brisk walking) during the first 3 rounds.
- Step 5: After completing Tawaf, pray 2 Rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim.
- Step 6: Drink Zamzam water and make Dua.
Dua for Tawaf:
“SubhanAllah, walhamdulillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar.”
What is Sa’i?
Where? Between Safa & Marwah
When? After Tawaf
Sa’i is the act of walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah 7 times, following the footsteps of Hajar (AS) as she searched for water for her son, Prophet Ismail (AS).
Symbolism of Sa’i:
- A test of faith and perseverance.
- A reminder of Allah’s mercy and provision.
How to Perform Sa’i
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Step 1: Start at Safa and make Niyyah:
📜 “Inni sa’aytu bayna as-Safa wal-Marwah sab’ata ashwat, ibtigha’a wajhillah ta’ala.” - Step 2: Walk from Safa to Marwah while making Dua & Dhikr.
- Step 3: Upon reaching Marwah, pause & pray.
- Step 4: Repeat the walk 7 times, ending at Marwah.
- Step 5: After completing Sa’i, men trim or shave their hair, and women trim a fingertip’s length.
